Our guest speaker… Kevin Patience

A Power Point presentation by Author, Historian, Kevin Patience on the part Poole Bay played in connection with aviation from 1910–1976. Seaplanes operated from Poole in the First World War and in 1939 the harbour was taken over by Imperial Airways later B.O.A.C. now British Airways as a base for the Empire Class flying boats. The Second World War saw Poole become one of the busiest airports in the world operating flying boats and seaplanes from B.O.A.C., the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy.

Brownsea Island became a STARFISH decoy base and was part of the defences in the protection of the Royal Navy cordite factory at Holton Heath. Poole was bombed on a number of occasions and was heavily defended in case of German invasion.

During the Battle of Britain, Poole and the surrounding area witnessed many dog fights overhead and had its fair share of aircraft crashes and in June 1944 was a key port for the D Day invasion..

Kevin tells a side to the story of Poole that few people realise took place in this seaside town on Dorset’s south coast.

CHAPS

There are many men just wanting to have time with other men not knowing where to go or who to meet to talk and put the world to rights with. Covid has created more loneliness, isolation and fear, and sometimes even being in a relationship can still feel lonely  with the need for male time. We don't want to exclude anyone, just create the space and time for men to meet and we will be inviting topical speakers on sport, bikes, cars, mens health, finance, emotions or any chosen male subjects. It's your club to suggest our next steps to support CHAPS that want more than a pub, but a club.
